The proceedings of the international conference entitled “Africa–Europe: Demographic Dynamics, Youth, Migration and Development” commenced on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at the Mustapha Djafour Auditorium of the University of Tlemcen’s downtown pole. Organized as part of the European Union-funded Jean Monnet Project, the event brings together academics, experts, and researchers from Algeria as well as several African and European countries.

Spanning two days, the conference aims to strengthen academic dialogue and foster the exchange of expertise on demographic and geopolitical transformations and their implications for development and cooperation between the two continents.

The opening ceremony was marked by an address delivered by the Rector of the University of Tlemcen, Prof. Mourad MEGHACHOU, who emphasized the importance of international scientific cooperation in addressing contemporary demographic issues and anticipating future challenges. Remarks were also delivered by Ms. Samira CHADAR, Deputy Director for Cooperation and Inter-University Exchanges at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and Mr. Mohammed BOUDOUR, representative of the Erasmus+ National Office in Algeria. The inaugural session also featured keynote presentations on the European vision for academic cooperation and the prospects of Africa–Europe relations in a rapidly changing global context.

The first day featured several specialized scientific sessions addressing key issues related to demographic dynamics, migration, and sustainable development. Participants discussed ways to transform Africa’s demographic growth into an economic and developmental opportunity, as well as employment challenges in Algeria, migration issues and demographic transition in North African countries, and the impact of urbanization and climate change on populations and development. Additional presentations highlighted the role of women’s empowerment in demographic transformations and the importance of public policies in supporting these changes.

The conference provides a valuable platform for the exchange of knowledge and experiences among researchers and experts from various disciplines, thereby strengthening academic cooperation between African and European universities and contributing to the production of scientific knowledge capable of addressing the demographic, social, and economic challenges facing both continents.

The conference will continue on Thursday, June 11, 2026, with additional scientific sessions and international online discussion platforms involving researchers and experts from several countries. The event will conclude with the presentation of the final report and the reading of recommendations resulting from this international scientific gathering.
