On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of its establishment and the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the glorious Revolution, the Faculty of Letters and Foreign Languages at the University of Tlemcen organized a scientific conference on Sunday, November 10, 2024, titled “Didactics of the Arabic Language and Foreign Languages in Academic Research and the Dissemination of Algerian Culture.” The event was held in the presence of the university's rector, Prof. Mourad Meghachou, Prof. Koual Magani from the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of Tlemcen, Dr. Nasreddine Khalil, Dr. Leyla Allem from the Translation Department at the University of Oran, and Dr. Nazha Khalfaoui from the Applied Linguistics Department at the Center for Scientific and Technical Research in Arabic Language Development at the Tlemcen Research Unit, along with other leading experts and academic specialists.
The conference addressed a major issue in the academic landscape related to language didactics within the university context, emphasizing the need to master foreign languages alongside Arabic for scientific research and global academic communication. A particular focus was placed on the gradual transition of the language of research from French to English, especially in the fields of exact sciences and medicine. The importance of translation in the global dissemination of Algerian culture was also discussed, whether in the literary, scientific, or artistic domains.
The conference concluded with a call for the implementation of effective strategies for language teaching in Algerian universities, stressing the need for a balance between promoting the Arabic language and opening up to global languages in service of scientific research and the dissemination of Algerian culture
